A Great Place to Buy Wine
I like good wine. I would not call myself an expert because I haven't tasted thousands of bottles of different wines and vintages, and I certainly cannot describe wine the way the professionals do ("a hint of chocolate, with overtones of rosemary, peaches and newly mown hay"). But I enjoy wine, especially good, hearty red wine. You can spend a great deal of money if you want to purchase fine wine at a wine store. However, there is a less certain, less expensive, and more adventurous way to find excellent wine if you live in the six Western States or Hawaii. The place to shop is Grocery Outlet. The other day on the recommendation of an expert I purchased for $20 each two bottles of a wine that normally sell for between $50 and $100 dollars a bottle. I have yet to taste it -- I'm waiting for a special occasion -- but I think that when I do, it will probably have the quality my friend suggested it has. Unless you really know wine, which I don't, the way to shop for wine at Grocery Outlet is to examine the rather large selection, blindly buy a few bottles (normally you shouldn't pay more than $6/bottle), take your bottles home and sample them one by one a few days. When you find a wine you really like, go back to the store and buy as much as you want for your wine cellar. Everything at Grocery Outlet seems to be on the shelves a week or two, then vanish forever, so if you don't buy what you like fairly quickly, you probably won't see it again. I have found some wonderful wines at great bargain prices -- we're talking $4 for a bottle that would normally sell for $20. At Grocery Outlet, you'll find a big selection of wines from all over the world. Be adventurous. And don't be afraid to ask who the store wine expert is, and then to ask him or her what he thinks the best wine for the money may be. They're always happy to help out. |
