Bodybuilding and Steroids
In the wake of the great BALCO steroid scandal, there seems to be no end to news and rumors about the use of these illegal substances. I should disclose here that I used to work for BALCO in a position involving a combination of sales, marketing and research. This was before the CEO of the company, Victor Conte, got involved in the distribution and sales of steroids, for which he spent about 4 months in prison. But looking back on the situation, I suspect from the nature of some of the clients I saw coming through the doors that the sales and distribution of steroids at the company may have been starting at about the time I left. Just so the reader knows that I know what I am talking about, I should also disclose that I was once an amateur, competitive bodybuilder ("natural," and not a very good one, I might add) and that I once owned a hardcore bodybuilding gym that I bought from someone else. The gym was so hardcore that the day I assumed ownership I found used syringes and empty steroid vials in both a storage closet and the parking lot ! What has struck me about the steroid scandal, as it expands farther and farther way from BALCO and into more of baseball than it started in, is that I know that the investigators know of the widespread use of steroids in IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilders) professional bodybuilding, but choose to do little about it. They want high-profile targets for their investigations and indictments, people like Barry Bonds. Its only by busting well-known people like Bonds that one can advance one's career. As far as IFBB pro bodybuilders are concerned, though I cannot prove it with witnesses and solid court evidence, it is almost certain that not one of the International Federation of Bodybuilders top 25 contenders got to where he now is in competitive bodybuilding without taking steroids. You simply don't come to weigh 285 pounds at a height of 5' 11" by eating chicken breasts, baked potatoes and broccoli ! A few IFBB pro bodybuilders have been prosecuted, but not many, and these only when a trail led directly to them and it took no work to prove what they were doing. Novitsky, the main man in the BALCO investigation and who has been listed as the top drug investigator in the country in recent news releases, spent more than a year diving at least once a week into the BALCO dumpster at midnight. He knows precisely who is responsible for steroid sales and distribution in Northern California (and I KNOW he does, because when he interviewed me in the BALCO investigation he discussed this), yet he has done nothing to stop steroids in the area of amateur bodybuilding. I would venture to say that the abuse of steroids in bodybuilding circles is far more widespread than in baseball. Yet targets such as Barry Bonds obviously bring more headlines and career advancement to an investitagtor than does going after the lesser-known users and distributors. Should we care ? Probably not. Not many people care about bodybuilding, anyway. |
