California CBEST Test To become a substitute teacher in the state of California, one must pass what is known as the CBEST test. This is a general examination about three hours long that tests your english, math and logical abilities. In the English section, you are asked to spend time writing an essay on a subject you are given at the test. Having written several published books and numerous articles, and having won at least four writing prizes, including a nomination for a Nebula Award for the year's berst short novel, I wrote my essay and awaited my score. I barely passed. Thge writing section of the test really does not test your ability to write. It merely tests your ability to write a first draft. All good writers rewrite drafts, sometimes many, many times. One of the teachers I most resapect took the CBEST test and failed it four different times before finally passing it. Another friened, who happens to have a PhD from Stanford, had to take it two times before he passed. Perhaps the CBEST test should be evaluated even more urgently than the people taking it.
