Fingerprinting and Becoming a Tutor or Teacher in California
To become either a tutor or a substitute teacher in the State of California, one must be fingerprinted and the prints must be submitted to the FBI and possibly to other authorities. This is to ensure that no child molesters, felons or other criminals get into the system where they can harm school children. I was fingerprinted and went through the process about a year ago when I wanted to become a tutor. At that time I was certified as being "child safe," which means that I was found not to be a danger to any child and could be allowed to be alone with a child. I was then fingerprinted in August 2007. For this, I had to pay about US $70. I started my substitute teaching a few days later. Two months afterwards I received a letter from the California State Department of Education saying I could not be certified until I was fingerprinted. Evidently someone along the way -- probably someone in Sacramento -- had lost my fingerprints. I went and got fingerprinted again. Two months later I received the same letter saying that I could not be certified as a substitute teacher until I was fingerprinted. I got fingerprinted again. Six weeks after that, I received an identical communication. I got fingerprinted for a fourth time in less than a year. I had been teaching as a substitute teacher since the very end of August 2007. Several weeks ago, in January 2008, I finally received a letter from the State Department of Education enclosing a copy of my certification. If you think city school systems are screwed up, you need to look elsewhere, too. Based on its performance, I would say that the State Department of Education also contributes greatly to the mismangement of our schools. |
