I love magazines. I love the outlooks and news they bring. And I love being exposed to all kinds of opinions, including those from across the world. One of the interesting magazines I encountered a little more than a year ago is called The Week.
It reviews domestc and foreign events, opinions and information that have become particularly important and/or noteworth during the past seven days.
I subscribed to The Week after receiving one of those common subscription solicitation letters, and I haven't been disappointed. I read the magazine thoroughly each week, usually within a day or two of its arrival, and so does my wife. We both enjoy it.
Just to give you a sense of the publication's flavor, here's what I found interesting in the Feb 15, 2008 issue:
The main story concerned our US election, "Obama and Clinton to a Draw . . .McCain Assumes the mantle of Front-runner." This article not only presents facts, but also quotes editorials from across the nation.
Another article asked: "Obama: Is he the second coming of JFK?"
Little squibbs noted it was a good or bad week for certain things: For instance, it was good for buying gold at a discount after a company minted 10,000 24-carot gold coins bearing the words "New England Patriots 19-0 Super Bowl XLII Champions."
A Three-page section every week devoted to interesting and important world events, and appropriately entitled The World, includes maps showing where each country or location can be found.
Each issue usually has a briefing on some subject. In this issue, one on Human Cloning. The briefing is one page long, very condensed and factual, quoting numerous sources.
One of the most interesting sections each week is devoted to the best columns in the United States and the best in Europe.
Here and there The Week also includes little squibbs from other magazines. These may be 50 words long, but they're informative and factual, sometimes funny. For instance, Newsweek reported that Giuliani spent $60 million on his campaign and only got one delegate.
There's alk'ways a page devoted to the most cutting politici'al cartoons that have appeared during the past seven days. These are a hoot !
There are always pages devoted to health and science, art reviews, film reviews, music reviews and stage reviews.
One of the sections I always enjoy is devoted to FOOD ! Yes, wonderful food ! There's always a description of a dish and a recipe for making it. This week, halibut with Parsley-Lemon Sauce, followed by a recipe for Roasted Potato Skewers. Is there anyone around who doesn't enjoy eating ?
A tantalizing weekly section two-pages long is devoted to real estate: "The Best Properties on the Market." It's fun to see how you could live if you were very rich. Occasionally a $500,000 bargain creeps into the display, but not very often.
I could go on with a much longer description. I do want to add before closing that each issue has a section devoted to some well-known living author''s picks of their favorite books selected from a lifetime of reading. Great info !
You can find This Week on the newstand. Or you can call 1-877-245-8151.
Incidentally, I have no connection with This Week. I just enjoy it when it arrives every week in my mailbox.
