Media Review -- The Sun Magazine # 2

I wrote recently about a magazine I like very much, the Sun Magazine.

The day after I posted my intel about it, I received a letter from them. The letter told about something they had recently done which I consider to be one of the most moral and courageous acts I have heard of a business doing. Understand as I describe this to you this important part of the context. The Sun has struggled financially for quite a few years.

The letter described a communication they had received for the "Reader Writes" section that I mentioned in my last post about them. It had come from a prisoner on death row and described gang activity. The inmate specifically requested that they omit his name. He said that if his name were to be attached to the printed letter, he would be killed by gang members.

The magazine had just finished printing its new issue -- 80,000 copies of it. As it sat on the loading dock, ready to be carried off to the post office, someone discovered that the inmate's name had mistakenly been printed.

The pickup was temporarily canceled while the magazine staff tried to decide what to do.

The staff attempted a variety of methods to remove the writer's name from the article. They tried blacking it out with a dark pen. They tried cutting it out with a knife. Nothing worked.

Should they send the magazine out to the subscribers and news stands ? Or should they put the very existence of the magazine in jeopardy and possibly lose it entirely by having to reprint the issue from scratch, omitting the inmate's name, and going bankrupt ?

In the end, they reprinted the magazine without the inmate's name, and sent it out. They then sent a letter to all the subscribers describing the situation and what they had done. They did not beg for help, but they did enclose a contribution envelope.

I have rarely seen the media do as courageous a thing as what The Sun did. I sent them $30, and hope that many others did, too.
