On Modeling, Images, and the Value of Photos of Yourself
In the last few decades I have photographed hundreds and hundreds of people. It is simply true that if you wish to be a model, you must start by gathering a portfolio of images of yourself to present to people who want to consider hiring you. To get these images, you should work with several photographers. One is probably not enough, because every photographer sees things differently, and you should have a selection of photos of yourself that demonstrates modeling versatility. And you should be working with photographers who really know how to take photos and how to show you off in the ways you wish to be shown off. This rules out spending much time with amateurs. Let me mention a crooked racket that feeds off the egos of would-be models. A prospective model calls a company listed in the yellow pages as a "modeling agency." The agent meets with them or discusses matters over the phone. They propose -- no, they insist -- that you have a portfolio of photos taken, and that these be taken only by their photographer. Their photographer will charge $500 or $1,000 for this service. What's going on here is that they are not really running a modeling agency. They are running a photography studio. They will almost certainly do nothing for you once you've had your pictures taken. Maybe they'll have a class or two about how to walk on a runway. But they won't boost your career. Another scam is that they may tell a prospective model that they are willing to represent him or her, but the model must pay a fee. This is bogus, too, because a real modeling agency would evaluate the talent and only represent people they thought they could make money off of by representing them. To have a photographer work with you, you must offer that photographer something in exchange. Normally he or she won't be interested in photographing you just because you're wonderful. You can pay your photographer the going rate. Maybe this is between $500 and $1,000 for a half a day's work. I have on occasion received $2,000/day. You may occasionally find a photographer who will take photos of you suitable for your modeling portfolio free of charge, with the stipulation that you sign his photo release. In return, he will provide you with a disc of the photos. A photographer would propose this arrangement or agree to it only if he felt that he could do something with your photos to make money. He could do this instead of taking money from you. Maybe he could sell them to a fitness magazine or to an ad agency. I have occasionally found people who wanted their photos taken, who were unable to pay for my services, and who were unwilling to sign a photo release. They were convinced that their images were so valuable that I would somehow make thousands and thousands of dollars off them. A large percentage of handsome or beautiful people think that images of themselves are worth a lot more than they really are, and don't realize that the world is full of handsome or beautiful people who are more handsome or beautiful than they are. Whenever I encounter someone so stuck on themselves, I just give them a polite goodbye. And it is a fact that I have never seen one of these handsome or beautiful people become a professional model. Without the photos, which they were unwilling to pay or trade for, they were never able to make it. |
