Student Learning Incentives
By Richard Goodman
When I substitute teach, it is a given that the students tend to regard the period as a holiday during which they need not work. Unless the regular teacher has worked hard to impress upon the class the need for students to do their classwork, one is lucky to have 50% of the students actually doing classwork. I always leave notes about the students so that when their regular teacher returns he or she will know what went on. For those who misbehave, unless the returning teacher imposes sanctions, the student will continue forever on a course of laziness. To push students, a substitute teacher has to go up and down the aisles of desk, urging them into action. But the key to success lies not in the classroom. It lies in the student's home and the attitudes of the parents. We hear a lot about needing "better teachers." Disagreeing with this proposition would be like disagreeing about the worth or mother or apple pie. In my opinion, needing "better teachers" isn't the problem. The problem lies in motivating more families to intill a work ethic in their children and in communicating to them the importance of success in school. |
