The Greatest Wine Bargain
It was purely by accident that I came across the greatest wine bargain I have ever found. I listen to a great deal of National Public Radio, and sometimes their stories provoke me to go to their web site (NPR.org). One morning I went to the site and found an item about the "best wine bargain." It was Charles Shaw cabernet sauvignon or merlot (I forget which) at Trader Joes. I went to TJs and found cases of Charles Shaw wines -- about four types, two red and two white -- stacked by the door. People were constabntly coming to the cases and taking away bottles, and sometimes entire cases. The price was, I think, $1.98/bottle for all four varieties. That's what it is now, too. For $1.98, the best you can usually hope for is something that will remove varnish. Nevertheles, on NPR's recommendation, I bought several bottles. That night I tasted the merlet. Magnificent ! A $20 bottle, at least. What a bargain. These days I always keep a few bottles of Charles Shaw reds in the house. For the price, you cannot find better wine. And for a lot more money finding better wine would still be difficult. |
